Winter Haven, Florida is the second most populated city in Polk County. During the 2010 census the population was 33,874 and when the census was taken in 2013 it was estimated that the city of Winter Haven had grown to 35,531. It is a principal city of the Lakeland-Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical area. Less than 50 miles from the lively city of Orlando, Winter Haven is known as the home of the Cypress Gardens theme park. There are 50 fresh-water lakes within the city limits of Winter Haven, many of which are connected by a system of canals. The Chain of Lakes play an important part in the wildlife population as well as providing numerous water-based sports and activities for visitors and residents alike. They say that bass fishing is at its very best in the surrounding lakes of Winter Haven. The Lakes are home to alligators, turtles, blue heron and even the bald eagle. The Cleveland Indians professional baseball team call Winter Haven their spring training home. Winter Haven is situated in the humid subtropical zone. The average temperature is 73.2 degrees F with an average of 50.3 inches of rainfall each year. One can expect daily rain fall during the summer months of June, July, August and September, and these months also include the height of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. The earliest known inhabitants of the land were the Timucua and Calusa Indian Tribes. When the Spanish explorers arrived on the scene in the early 1500's, they brought with them war and many diseases and this caused both tribal units to decline eventually bringing death to all the early inhabitants. Four hundred years later none of the Timucua and Calusa peoples existed. In 1911 the City of Winter Haven was incorporated. In 1915 they began to dig and construct the connecting lake canals for easier maneuvering, hunting and fishing. The first Florida boom hit in the 1920's and Winter Haven became a great place to visit and to settle in, however when the Great Depression hit it visibly slowed the growth in the Florida peninsula.
In 1930 Winter Haven welcomed the first Publix Supermarket and one of the largest fruit packing plants in the world. Cypress Gardens was opened in 1936. Many famous people visited Winter Haven, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Betty Grable and King Hussein of Jordan. Anheuser-Busch corporation purchased the Cypress Gardens Theme Park and continued to operate it until 1995, eventually closing it's doors to the public in 2009. Legoland Florida was built on the Cypress Gardens site beginning in early 2010 and opened its doors in October 2011.
